STUDENT CHALLENGE PROGRAM SUMMARY
PROJECT-BASED LEARNING THAT DOESN'T FORGET THE LEARNING

aSTEAM Village is a regional partner of the Ten80 Education National STEM League (NSL), a program recently named an Exemplary and Scalable STEM program by Change the Equation. The NSL cultivates 21st Century Skills and supports Common Core and NGSS Standards by helping every student find her or his role in a team engaged in the sports industry (specifically auto racing), automation and navigation, sustainable energy and innovations in citizen commerce and community leadership.

With five different challenges and the option to collaborate online and/or face-to-face, the time commitment from educators can vary to fit local circumstances - that is part of being scalable.

Each of the following Challenges are implemented as a stand-alone STEM course, out-of-school Club, summer Camp or integrated into core mathematics and science classes.

Inquire about your site participating in one or all of the programs.

Rover and racing teams compete in head-to-head events and time trials. All NSL teams follow an innovation model that combines the engineering process, enterprise process and challenge-specific content and skills: they get and stay ahead through Data-Driven Design, manage and market themselves (Enterprise) and do well by doing good (Community Leadership).

STUDENT RACING CHALLENGE

Optimize performance of your team and 1:10 scale radio-controlled car. Begin by becoming ‘certified’ in data handling, problem solving and mechanical systems then specialize into research, enterprise, engineering, automation and coding

STUDENT ENERGY CHALLENGE

Evaluate an energy-related issue and engineer a solution with a balanced energy budget

STUDENT ROVER CHALLENGE

Combine software and hardware to teach a robot to navigate and map a maze. In 2015-16 integrate GPS to teach the rover to control an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)

STUDENT INNOVATION CHALLENGE

All NSL Challenges prepare students to apply lessons learned about the Innovation process to pitch an innovation in citizen commerce and/or community leadership

STUDENT LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE

All students are invited to take up this challenge to innovate solutions to community-based issues
